How much does it cost to replace a furnace in San Diego, CA?
Furnace replacement in San Diego, CA typically runs $3,800–$7,500 installed for a standard-efficiency gas furnace, and $6,000–$10,500 for high-efficiency condensing models. The quote should name the efficiency (AFUE), the warranty, and whether ductwork or venting changes are included — those are where cheap quotes grow.
What you can check yourself
- Apply the age test: a furnace 18–20+ years old with a major failure (heat exchanger, blower) is usually a replace, not a repair.
- Ask for the AFUE rating in every quote and compare like-for-like — an 80% and a 96% furnace aren't the same product.
- Ask about utility rebates and federal tax credits for high-efficiency models; good installers itemize them.
- Get the heat-exchanger verdict in writing if safety is cited — a cracked exchanger is a true shut-it-down finding, and you deserve the evidence.
Typical cost
Typical installed in San Diego, CA: standard gas furnace $3,800–$7,500; high-efficiency $6,000–$10,500. A cracked heat exchanger on an out-of-warranty furnace almost always tips the math to replacement.
When to call a pro
If any tech red-tags the furnace for a cracked heat exchanger, don't run it 'one more night' — carbon monoxide is the risk. Get the second quote fast, but keep it off.
